What is the purpose of EDD?

Where does EDD come from?
It is financed by unemployment program tax contributions from employers. When the UI program was established as a part of the Social Security Act of 1935, it offered for the first time, an economic line of defense against the effects of unemployment, assisting not only the individual but also the local community.
What is an EDD account?
The EDD Customer Account Number is a unique, ten-digit account number assigned by the Employment Development Department. Currently, this number is used on certain written correspondence and to register for UI Online. It does not replace your Social Security number.
