Can you work during cap gap?
The cap-gap extension of OPT is automatic for eligible students. A student does not file an application for the extension or receive a new Employment Authorization Document (EAD) to cover the additional time. In such situations, the student can continue to work while the update to their Form I-20 is being processed.
Foreign students in F-1 nonimmigrant status may work on campus without the approval of a designated school official (DSO) or USCIS. To complete Form I-9, these students may present a combination of their unexpired foreign passport and Form I-94 indicating F-1 nonimmigrant status as an acceptable List A document.
Does cap gap apply to CPT?
It is important to note that CPT holders do NOT benefit from the H-1b cap gap rule. That means that if your CPT expires prior to July 1st (you have a 60 day grace period), you may be required to leave the U.S., or switch to a different non-immigrant status. Can international students work more than 40 hours on OPT?
There is no maximum number of hours that can be worked while on STEM OPT, but because there is a minimum, it may be difficult to work for more than 2 employers. For example, if you work for two qualifying STEM OPT employers, at a minimum, you would need to be working 40 hours per week.
